Bastille Day, or La Fête Nationale, commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris on July 14, 1789, a pivotal event marking the start of the French Revolution. The Bastille, a medieval fortress and prison, symbolized the tyranny of the French monarchy and its arbitrary power. The storming was a symbolic act of defiance against the monarchy, leading to the eventual fall of the monarchy and the establishment of the First French Republic.
